Genko Genkov

Genko Genkov was born on February 1, 1923 in the village of Choba, near Brezovo. He grew up in Burgas, where he studied at the Semi-Classical High School. In 1948 he graduated from the National Art Academy in thec class of Prof. Dechko Uzunov. His first solo exhibition was in 1965, and in 1973 a retrospective exhibition was organized on the occasion of his fiftieth anniversary. Since 1972, he has been a recipient of the Order "Cyril and Methodius" III degree. His last solo exhibitions were in 1993 and in 2006. Genko Genkov mainly creates landscapes, in which bright tones and thick strokes give a sculptural appearance to the forms. The early works of the artist are distinguished by a darker and muted color, as well as by the more frequent presence of figures in space. As his artistic style developed, Genko began to stylize natural and anthropogenic forms more and more, summarizing them into an inseparable whole. Bright, warm color spots appear in these canvases, which shape the space between the main compositional cores - a tree, a house, a mountain or a path. The materials and techniques Genko uses in his paintings have also changed over the years. In his early creative pursuits, he experimented by sandblasting the canvas or with a knife, treating oil paint like watercolor. At a later stage, he uses different pigments that give a ceramic look to the texture. Regardless of the technique and the medium through which the painting was created, its colors are invariably pure and strong. Always carrying a specific symbolism and never the fruit of chance, the colors in Genko's canvases are a synthesis of our national color tradition and the principles of the modern avant-garde.
Genko Genkov died on March 3, 2006 in Sofia.
