Alexander Bozhinov
Alexander Bozhinov was born on February 24, 1878 in Svishtov. In 1896, he entered the newly opened State Drawing School in Sofia (today the National Art Academy). His talent as a cartoonist was evident in his early student years. From 1902 to 1904 he lived and worked as a freelance artist in Munich. After his return to Bulgaria, he became one of the most popular and valuable Bulgarian cartoonists. He is the author of numerous portrait caricatures of cultural and artistic figures. He establishes an original and creative style.
Together with Elin Pelin, he founded and edited Bulgaria's first humorous magazine "Bulgaran" (1904-1909). Bozhinov was also a gifted poet, feuilletonist, writer and art critic. He also works in the field of illustration - his illustrations for Ivan Vazov's "Under the Yoke" are very well known. He also left picturesque landscapes, still lives, interiors, monumental wall compositions. He worked in the field of applied arts.
He participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. His paintings are owned by NAG, SCAG, AG in Plovdiv, Sliven, Kardzhali.
In 1939, he was elected a regular member of the BAS.
He died on September 30, 1968 in Sofia.
